Run Like A Superhero at Justice League Fun Run 2017!

Joining fun runs has become a regular activity for some people who would like to maintain their stamina and good health, and recently, I have joined the bandwagon.

I had my first 5-km fun run recently (read my blog here), and this November, I was once again invited to join another fun run, and this time, I will run together with my son, weee!

For Justice League fans out there, there's a fun run specifically designed for you!  It'll be held on November 25, 2017 at SM By The Bay grounds.  There's also a Cebu leg of this event which will be held a week earlier than the Manila event.

This event is in line with the showing of Justice League The Movie on Philippine cinemas on November 16, 2017.

Why would you like to join this?  Here are 3 reasons to join me and my son and the rest of the Justice Leaguers out there:

1.  Registration fee is so affordable!  Choose among 3K, 5K, and 10K categories and you only have to pay Php800, Php1,100, and Php1,300 respectively.

2.  Race kit is so cool!  Choose among the six available singlets (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman, Batman, Cyborg, The Flash) with second costume to complete it.  Just a trivia, the singlets' designs were sent to Warner Bros. before it was mass produced, to make sure that the event organizers were able to capture look of the real ones.  One more thing, all run categories will receive the same set of race kit!  The race kit includes race bib with timing chip, singlet with the character of your choice, second costume that comes along with your singlet, drawstring bag, race manual, and finisher's medal.

Here are the second costumes for each character:

Superman--cape
Aquaman--arm sleeves
The Flash--mask
Cyborg--baller ID
Wonder Woman--cuff
Batman--mask

The finisher's medal does not look like your regular medal.  It looks like a dog tag but a cooler one.

3.  It's easy to register!  There are two ways to register for this event:

a.  online registration--go to www.philfunrun.com/justiceleague to register
b.  walk-in registration--register at Chris Sports (SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North EDSA Annex), Silverworks (SM Marikina, Glorietta, SM North EDSA Main), 7-Eleven stores, and CLIQQ Shops.

Isn't that amazing?  I do hope that you and your family will join this event!  Let's make running a fun and healthy way to stay fit!

For more information, you may visit the event's Facebook page (Justice League Run PH) and Instagram account (@justiceleaguerunph)

When My Son Treats Me Like A Queen

"A mother is her son's first love."

Kib and I are inseparable.  I always make sure that I give him quality bonding time and I always try my very best to let him experience the best things in life.  My friends would always say that "lagi kayong nasa lakwatsa" because they would always see our pictures on Instagram and Facebook being on different places and meeting celebrities.  It makes my heart melt whenever people would send me encouraging and inspiring messages, telling me that I'm doing a good job being a mother to my unico hijo.

I feel blessed to have a son like Kib.  He's very sweet and caring son.  He would prepare meals for us and would bring food inside our bedroom.  He would do this especially when I feel tired, when I'm busy with work, or when I'm sick.  He would gladly do this for me.

Sometimes, he would also treat me with a massage (read about it here).  He would also clean my fingernails (I have this tool which makes my fingernails shiny), carry my bag, and open doors for me.  I feel loved whenever my son does these things for me.

There are lots of heart-melting deeds my son did for me.  Here's one:

"When he was younger, he had this desire to buy a gift for me.  We were in Uniqlo then and me and my mom were trying out clothes there.  He would pick clothes from the rack which he thinks would look nice on me and would also encourage me to try it on.  But since he didn't have money at that time, I said that he buy me a gift next time.  He didn't forget that, so on the day of his birthday, he really brought some money from his piggy bank.  I didn't know that he got some of his money there.  So when we went again to Uniqlo, he was more determined to buy me a gift.  Just like earlier, he was picking clothes for me.  I was rejecting his offer and my mom saw the look on his face that he was disappointed.  So I just picked one shirt and he volunteered to pay for it.  He even asked my mom if she can add money to pay for the shirt because his money wasn't enough.  It was really a sweet gesture for my unico hijo.  This story was even shared at Smart Parenting (see article here)."

The things that Kib do for me gives me an assurance that despite of our unique family set-up, he has high regards towards me.

It's hard to be both a mother and a father.  Sometimes, it wears me out in playing dual roles at home.  While it's easier for me to teach Kib things about practical living, on the other hand, it's difficult to teach my son things that he should learn from a father.  One of the things that I am teaching my son is to love and respect women.  I am happy that he is growing up to be a fine gentleman.

Kib is now a tweener.  In few years, he will already be a teenager.  Honestly, I'm a bit anxious about it.  For sure, he'll exercise his independence more by then.  He'll be away from me for few hours, engaging in his own activity.  He will have activities with his friends more.  He would no longer go with me when I need to go somewhere.  While there will be changes in few years' time, he assured me that I will still be his first love no matter what.  I will be his queen, I will be his first love.

Experience the Classroom of the Future at Microsoft Experience Hub in Asia Pacific College

How do you describe a classroom?  It's a typical room with chairs, table, blackboard or white board, bulletin board, and ventilation (either airconditioning system or electric fan).  We would always dream of a classroom that we feel that is conducive to learning, with a feel of relaxation matched with perfect color palette.  Added to that, we wanted a state-of-the-art facilities in each classroom because we wanted our children to have the best learning experience in school.

But is there such thing as an ideal classroom?

Last October 18, 2017, Asia Pacific College (APC) unveiled the Microsoft Experience Hub, the classroom of the future.  The Microsoft Experience Hub is considered as a place for innovation, a center for digital revolution, and and environment for fun learning.

As one of Microsoft's Showcase Schools, APC transforms the typical classroom into a space where students can work, collaborate and experience learning that is flexible, personalized, and engaging.  The hub aims to foster an environment where unique learnings and intelligent insights can be derived.

In this space, students can also work on software and Internet of things (IoT) projects using Visual Studio, Azure IoT, Xamarin, and on the latest enterprise productivity tools.  In the academe like Office 365, OneNote, ClassNote, Microsoft Teams and Planners.  Microsoft's enterprise security tools can now be tested using scenario-based testing to learn about data privacy, network security, and its applicability to different situations.  Likewise, the hub will provide opportunities to learn about Microsoft's virtual and augmented reality initiatives with mixed reality headsets from various vendors.  Furthermore, the hub will provide the set-up required to learn Microsoft Azure services and offerings.

On the other hand, for Microsoft, this space can be their venue to provide technical seminars, hands-on tutorials and other activities to the APC community and its friends to further its goals of making people experience Microsoft technologies.

The hub will serve as a catalyst that would allow educators and students to experience innovation in technology and education.  The Microsoft Experience Hub will provide APC teachers and learners an environment where unique learnings and intelligent insights can be derived.  Fueled by all these factors, now is definitely the new tomorrow.

These are the major highlights of APC-Microsoft partnership:

1.  Building future-ready skills among students

  • Integration of Azure in the current curriculum
  • Integration of Microsoft tools in APC Senior High School
  • Adoption of Pasay City South High School (PCSHS) and supporting them with STEM skills, providing them access to productivity platform that gives them the edge
2.  Educator Capacity Building

  • Introduce Microsoft Education Ambassadors and MIEEs
  • Introduce MCEs (Microsoft Certified Educators)
  • Microsoft Student Partners
  • Microsoft Certified Students

Check out the photos below how the Microsoft Experience Hub looks like:

If all classrooms will look like this, for sure students will learn a lot and will be inspired to study very hard for their future.

There will be more Microsoft Experience Hubs in their other showcase schools and hopefully, they will be able to share their technology in public schools in the future too.

Our Fun Experience at Color Manila's Glitter Run

Let's get physical!

It's very important that we should always maintain good health so that we would live longer and be able to do activities that would not hinder us to have fun.  I am also always reminding my son to also take care of himself.  As a mother, it is my responsibility to raise a healthy child by feeding him nutritious food and providing activities that will keep him fit.

Kib had tried sikaran (Filipino martial arts), swimming, and recently, mountain climbing.  One of the things in my bucket list of mother and son activities is to run together.  I have been wanting to join fun runs in the past but since the assembly time is too early, it's so hard to wake up early, haha.  I've heard of evening runs too, unfortunately the schedules coincide with my other schedules too.

I'm so happy that finally, last October 22, I've joined my FIRST EVER fun run, weee!

My selfie after reaching the finish line

Yes, it's only me who joined, but I also tagged along Kib with me to be my photographer, haha.

I signed up at the 5-km run of Color Manila Glitter Run.  Color Manila has been organizing fun runs for the past five years.  What makes this run unique among the others is that participants will be drenched in water, splattered with colored powder, and will be treated with joyous after-run party with...more colors!

Runners at the starting line

The first 'surprise'--getting drenched in water so that the colored powder sticks to the clothes and body

The true meaning of Color Manila--to be colorful towards the end of the run!

More color!

Aside from the colored powder, we were also showered with foam bubbles!

Bubbles galore!

And the finale--GLITTERS!

At the after-event party where participants were showered with more colored powder, weee!

People are enjoying the idea of being 'colorful' after the event

I've been wanting to join Color Manila-organized runs because I can see pictures of happy runners who are spending fun and healthy time with their loved ones.  Color Manila run is no pressure at all; not timed, you can run, walk, or jog until you finish the course.

We arrived early at MOA concert grounds to get my race kit.  I talked with my son that he cannot join me at the run but he will be my photographer instead.  He agreed with the set-up but I can feel his desire that he wants to run with me.  When the crowd is getting bigger and bigger, I started to worry about his safety.  I didn't know where to leave him to wait for me while I finish the course.  I left my phone with him so he can call me when he needs me (I have two phones).  I told him that he can also run with me but he will just stay at the side.

When the race was about to start, I changed my mind.  I just told him to wait for me at the starting line until I finish the race.

Few minutes after the race started, I received a phone call.  Kib was calling me to tell me that he decided to follow because he doesn't know where to stay and wait!  So I stopped for awhile to wait for him.  I didn't let him run with me all throughout.  I let him wait at the U-turns and meet him there.

Kib was also drenched in colored powder

At the finish line, I can see that my son also enjoyed the whole activity even if he is not an official participant.

More fun runs to come for us!

Save and Win Your Dream Vacation at RCBC

My son and I love traveling.  I have always been writing about our adventures and the places that we have visited on my blog.  I try my best to go to a unique place at least once a year depending on the available funds that I have.  For me, traveling is the best experience that I can give to my son and the best bonding activity that we can do together.

Most people would say going to places can be costly.  Well, it really depends on the place that you want to go and the activities that you want to do.  Whenever me and my son travel, I spend most on the experience and not on shopping.

In addition, we travel because we wanted to reward ourselves for all our hard work.  We wanted to be able to enjoy our hard-earned money while we were young and able to go to different parts of the globe.   For some, travel is the best experience a person can have in his/her lifetime.

All About Eggs--Bounty Fresh Celebrates World Egg Day

Eggs are a staple in our household.  I always buy a dozen of eggs monthly and cook it in variety of ways--scrambled, sunny-side up, hard-boiled.  I also put eggs as an ingredient in the dishes that I cook for me and my son.  Up until this time, we only eat eggs in moderation.

From the recent event that I attended, the celebration of World Egg Day spearheaded by Bounty Fresh Eggs, I have learned a lot about eggs and debunked some myths that I know about eating eggs.

All About Eggs

Eggs are a very good source of inexpensive, high quality protein.  More than half the protein of an egg is found in the egg white along with vitamin B2 and lower amounts of fat and cholesterol than the yolk.  The whites are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12, and minerals such as zinc, iron, and copper.

We can benefit so much from eating eggs on a regular basis, as attested by Food Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) under the Department of Science and Technology.

  1. Strong muscles--the protein within eggs helps keep muscles working well while slowing the rate at which they are lost
  2. Brain health--eggs contain vitamins and minerals that are needed for the regular functioning of cells, including the brain, nervous system, memory, and metabolism
  3. Good energy production--eggs contain all the daily vitamins and minerals that are needed to produce energy in all the cells of the body
  4. A healthy immune system--vitamin A, vitamin B12, and selenium are key to keeping the immune system healthy
  5. Lower risk of heart disease--choline plays an important part in breaking down the amino and homocysteine, which is associated with the development of heart disease
  6. Healthful pregnancy--nutrients within eggs help to prevent congenital disabilities, such as spina bifida
  7. Eyesight--lutein and zeaxanthin help to prevent macular degeneration, the leading cause of age-related blindness.  Other vitamins also promote good vision
  8. Weight loss and maintenance--the high quality of protein within eggs might help keep people energized and feeling fuller for longer period of time.  Feeling full prevents snacking, which reduces overall calorie intake
  9. Skin benefits--some vitamins and minerals within eggs help promote healthy skin and prevent the breakdown of body tissues.  A strong immune system also contributes to a healthy overall look

An egg has 187mg of cholesterol, and the recommended limit is 300 mg per day--or only 200mg if you have diabetes or risk factors for heart disease.  Table eggs may cause mild increases in Total and LDL cholesterol levels, however, this should not be the cause of concern of the people.  On the contrary, eggs consistently raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels.  Study shows that one person can consume up to 3 whole eggs a day and is perfectly safe for those who are trying to stay healthy.  You may also check Philippine Egg Board's website to learn more about eggs and its benefits.

Sadly, among the countries in Southeast Asia, Philippines have the lowest egg consumption.  This is due to the adhering belief that egg is bad for the health due to its cholesterol levels.  Medical doctors also believe that too much egg consumption is bad for one's health.  While Philippines is rich in eggs, fish is also abundant in the country, thus, giving Filipinos an alternative protein source.

World Egg Day 2017

For the first time in the Philippines, World Egg Day was celebrated at the atrium of Eastwood Mall last October 12, 2017.  World Egg Day is usually held every second Friday of October and is celebrated in other countries like Australia, USA, UK, France, Brazil, Austria, Vietnam, and Indonesia.  The Philippine celebration was led by Bounty Fresh Eggs, the country's top egg producer.  This year's celebration is the onset of the annual celebration of World Egg Day in the country.

Bounty Fresh has become the Gold Standard in the Philippines when we talk about egg quality.  Bounty Fresh has a state-of-the-art facilities and is using healthy feeds on layer hens to ensure high quality eggs.  The people behind Bounty Fresh wishes that more and more Filipinos would add eggs in their regular meals because of its affordability and availability in the market.

You wonder how Bounty Fresh produce high quality eggs.  It starts with giving its layer hens the best care and comfort by housing them in environmentally controlled and fully automated houses that are tunnel ventilated.  These hens are also given complete vaccination against diseases and are subject to a medication program designed to boost their immune system.

The layer hens are also given the best nutrition formulated by the company's nutritionist to ensure that it meets the nutrient requirements for body maintenance and optimum production; that is, they can lay the number of eggs expected during its life span.  With this, consumers are ensured that the eggs from Bounty Fresh are in its optimum size and is covered with high quality egg shells to prevent the entry of bacteria and contaminants.  The albumen (egg white) and yolk are of excellent quality containing the finest nutrition so we can be assured that the eggs from Bounty Fresh are full of vitamins and minerals that people need in their daily life.

Now, once the eggs are produced, they are brought to storage facilities using a fully automated conveyor.  From the chicken house straight to the egg rooms, the eggs are fully secured to make sure that they don't get in contact with contaminants and bacteria.  This procedure will ensure that eggs are fresh and clean, making them safe for human consumption.

Once at the egg storage facilities, the eggs are then selected and graded by fully automated computer-programmed grading machines.  This process is done to make sure that: a.) dirty eggs and eggs with cracks or "hairline" cracks that are not visible to the eye are removed when they pass through the so-called "candling area" section of the conveyor, and b.) eggs are sorted by the machine and not by human hands to prevent contact with contaminants.

After the eggs have been sorted, the are stored in optimum temperature to maintain freshness and quality of the albumen and yolk.  A quality assurance team randomly inspects the eggs to confirm if the harvested eggs meet the quality standards that the company has set.

Bounty Fresh aims that with the celebration of World Egg Day, Filipinos would consume egg on a daily basis.

Bounty Fresh executives together with the event host, Ms. Bettina Carlos

Happy World Egg Day everyone!
